Major primary ores include bastnasite, monazite, loparite, xenotime and ion-adsorption clays. Even in “rich deposits” europium is found in low concentrations, typically below 0.1%.
Europium is a highly reactive, soft, ductile, silvery-white lanthanide metal, known to be the most reactive and least dense of the rare-earth elements. It’s primarily used in phosphors for red color displays, fluorescent lamps, anti-counterfeiting ink, and it’s also valued as a neutron absorber for nuclear control rods.
