Kogatana Knife

1) Folded steel blade, which is a hammer-welded mixture of 1060 high carbon steel, manganese spring steel, 1045 soft steel and many more smaller portions of other steels. This mixture is then folded multiple times to remove impurities, creating many hundreds of individual steel layers, finally producing arguably the best blade-making steel available. Attributes include a hard, razor sharp cutting edge, with highly desirable blade elasticity and resilience. 

2) Stainless steel blade, which is primarily an iron-base alloyed with significant chromium, nickel and carbon, along with smaller amounts of molybdenum and vanadium. Attributes include a low maintenance, highly-corrosion resistant blade, that is both tough and durable, and capable of extreme blade deflections. Additionally, stainless blades can easily be sharpened to a razor-sharp degree. 

Completed with a solid brass Kozuka handle, which in this case is artfully devoted to nature, the purpose of a beautiful Kozuka handle was to display a Samurai warrior’s rank and status. Images of nature carried significant spiritual weight for the Samurai, especially Samurai from rural clans, still largely dependent on the land for survival and for supporting their way of life.
