Gomai Folded Sword

The structural layout consists of a hard folded steel core, providing blade strength and rigidity, which is then wrapped with soft folded steel, encasing all-but the core’s extruding spine, providing enhanced flexibility and elasticity. This soft folded steel is then wrapped with hard folded steel, encasing all-but the spine, creating a hard steel cutting edge, and two hard side-jackets. 

All of this is engineered well before and separate to the quenching and tempering process, creating a natural hardness differential between the two steel-grades in key-locations throughout the blade. 

Further promoting perfection, is the very difficult process of clay-tempering the blade. This process precisely facilitates hardening of the blade’s edge, while leaving the blade’s core and spine softer and thus resilient. Definitely a marker of advanced sword-making technology and visibly identifiable on this Shinken sword blade.

The lacquered hardwood scabbard, along with the intricately decorative sword fittings, complement this Uchigatana sword appropriately. And the hardwood, wrapped with genuine stingray-skin & quality cord form a traditional and effective Japanese Samurai handle grip.
