Folded Steel Sword

Beautifully intertwined with images of nature, which carried significant spiritual weight for the Samurai, especially Samurai warriors from rural clans, still largely dependent on the land for survival and for supporting their way of life.

Equipped with a folded steel blade, which is a hammer-welded mixture of 1095 & 1060 high carbon steel, manganese spring steel, 1045 soft steel and many more smaller portions of other steels. This mixture is then folded multiple times to remove impurities, creating many hundreds of individual steel layers, finally producing arguably the best sword-making steel available.

The process and technique is renowned for smithing the finest combat sword blades, and certainly forms a very lethal foundational core to this true Katana sabre. 

Further promoting perfection, is the very difficult process of clay-tempering the blade. This process precisely facilitates hardening of the blade’s edge, while leaving the blade’s core and spine softer and thus resilient. Definitely a marker of advanced sword-making technology and visibly identifiable on this Shinken sword blade.

Completed with a hand-painted, lacquered hardwood scabbard, along with solid brass sword fittings – many of which are plated in real gold & silver, and a hardwood, wrapped with genuine stingray-skin & silk cord handle, forming a traditional, practical and effective Japanese Samurai hand-grip.
