Arguably the best steel available for Katana sword-making, characteristics include a reliable, hard & sharp cutting edge, excellent blade strength, along with good blade elasticity and resilience, which 1095 being technically a higher carbon content spring steel, is renowned for. 

Further promoting perfection, is the very difficult process of clay-tempering the blade. This process precisely facilitates hardening of the blade’s edge, while leaving the blade’s core and spine softer and thus resilient.
