Using folded steel, which is a mixture of 1045 soft steel, 1060 high carbon steel, manganese spring steel and many more smaller portions of other steels. This mixture is then folded multiple times to remove impurities, creating many hundreds of individual steel layers, finally producing arguably the best sword-making steel available, a technique renowned for smithing Japanese Katana blades.
With this folded steel, the blade is then hand-forge laminated into three separate sections, creating an advanced Gomai laminate structure. The structural layout consists of a hard steel cutting edge, extending up both sides of the blade forming a “V” shape. This layer produces the hard cutting edge and protects the inner blade with a hard protective shell or jacket layer.
Using the same general “V” shape, soft steel is used directly on-top-of and within the first hard steel layer, with the purpose of providing great flexibility and elasticity for the blade. A very important aspect of any true Katana and combat sword destined to survive battle.
Finally, and what makes the Gomai laminate unique compared to other popular laminate configurations is the third section of hard steel in the shape of a strip, sitting directly within the second soft steel layer. The purpose of this hard steel strip is to provide rigidity to what would otherwise be a large mass of soft steel with a real risk of over flexing in combat.
Further promoting perfection, is the very difficult process of clay tempering the blade. This process precisely facilitates hardening of the blade’s edge, while leaving the blade’s core and spine softer and thus resilient. Definitely a marker of advanced Japanese sword making technology and visibly identifiable on this sword’s blade.
The end result is a blade with a hard, reliable and unmatched razor sharp cutting edge with excellent, yet mediated blade elasticity and resilience.
