Characteristics include a hard, reliable battle edge, which will hold its edge and stay sharp for longer than most other steels used for swordsmithing. Furthermore, the blade encapsulates some of the best resilience and elasticity attributes, which significantly reduce the chance of blade damage during combat. 

Further promoting perfection, is the very difficult process of clay tempering the blade. This process precisely facilitates hardening of the blade’s edge, while leaving the blade’s core and spine softer and thus resilient. Definitely a marker of advanced Japanese sword making technology.
