With these two steels, the blade is then hand-forged laminated into three separate sections, with the layout consisting of a hard steel cutting edge, extending through the core to the exposed spine, along with two medium-hardness steel side-jackets.

The purpose of this laminate is to utilize the tough, hard and durably sharp cutting edge capability of hard steel, while facilitating additional blade resilience and elasticity with medium steel jackets. A Sanmai laminate is arguably the most battle-effective structural configuration available for real combat, and certainly forms a very lethal foundational core to this Chinese sword. 

Further promoting perfection, is the very difficult process of clay-tempering the blade. This process precisely facilitates hardening of the blade’s edge, while leaving the blade’s core and spine softer and thus resilient.
