The Tachi Japanese sword, an early predecessor to the Uchigatana or “striking Katana”, was by far the most popular sword between the years 900 and 1596. Distinguished by its often highly curved longsword blade, these Japanese long swords were designed more as a sabre sword, commonly wielded from horseback, they undisputedly produced superior cutting and slashing blows compared to the more modern Katana.

Equipped with an advanced Shihozume sword blade, which is a forge-weld laminate using three world-renowned steels, including T10 high carbon steel, medium 1060 steel, and soft folded steel, which is a mixture of 1060 carbon steel, manganese spring steel, 1045 soft steel and many more smaller portions of other steels – repeatedly folded.

With these three steel grades, the blade is then hand-forged laminated into five separate sections, with the layout consisting of a hard steel cutting edge, soft steel core, and three medium steel side-jackets & spine-capping. 

The purpose of this laminate is to utilize the tough, hard and durably sharp cutting edge capability of hard steel, while facilitating additional blade resilience with medium steel jackets and the excellent elasticity of soft steel. A Shihozume laminate is one of the most sophisticated and battle-effective structural configurations available for real combat, and certainly forms a very lethal foundational core to this true Samurai Tachi. 

Further promoting perfection, is the very difficult process of clay-tempering the blade. This process precisely facilitates hardening of the blade’s edge, while leaving the blade’s core and spine softer and thus resilient. Definitely a marker of advanced Japanese sword-making technology and visibly identifiable on this Shinken sword blade.

Tastefully completed with a hardwood, wrapped with real stingray-skin scabbard, along with solid brass fittings, and a hardwood, wrapped with genuine stingray-skin handle, forming a traditional, practical and effective Japanese Samurai hand-grip.
