With these three steel grades, the blade is then hand-forged laminated into four separate sections, with the layout consisting of a hard 1095 steel cutting edge, medium 1060 steel core & exposed spine, and two medium folded steel side-jackets.
The purpose of this laminate is to utilize the tough, hard and durably sharp cutting edge capability of 1095 steel, while facilitating additional blade elasticity with medium folded steel jackets, and utilizing 1060s renowned resilience for the blade’s core & spine. A Honsanmai laminate is one of the most sophisticated and battle-effective structural configurations available for real combat, and certainly forms a very lethal foundational core to this Japanese Samurai knife.
Further promoting perfection, is the very difficult process of clay-tempering the blade. This process precisely facilitates hardening of the blade’s edges, while leaving the blade’s core softer and thus resilient. Definitely a marker of advanced Japanese blade-making technology and visibly identifiable on this Shinken Tanto fixed blade knife.
Completed with a superb hardwood, wrapped with real stingray-skin Tanto sheath, solid brass knife fittings – with many decorations plated in real gold & silver, and a hardwood, wrapped with genuine stingray-skin & silk-cord handle, forming a traditional, practical and effective hand-grip.
This Japanese Tanto knife is sharp and deadly, and is executed with impressive craftsmanship. It’s highly collectable, a pleasure to own, and a formidable Tanto weapon to use.
